Great Shot!

Ania did it again. She wowed the crowd with an awesome three point shot in basketball, just a short half an hour ago. The team went on to feel the pains of defeat, but in my eyes, Ania was the star.

Makes me think of a time last season....

Double Digits

Today our family bids a fond farewell to those tender single digit years as our baby turns ten, which leaves me asking the question, "Where have all those years gone?"

Lucia, you are a treasure to me and to our family, and I love you dearly! May your heart always stay close to Jesus!

Happy, happy birthday my little Cici Bean!

And may you always fit on my lap!

In the Distressing Disguise of the Poorest of the Poor

Be with us Mary along the way, guide every step we take. Lead us to Jesus, your loving Son, come with us Mary come. No man can live as an island, journeying through life alone, since we're most loved by a Mother, Jesus gave us His own.

Oh most pure and loving heart, of my Mother and my Queen, grant that I may love Thee, love Thee daily more and more. Grant that I may love Thee, love Thee daily more and more.

Oh, the familiar songs of the Missionaries of Charity is like a homecoming to me. There is something so peaceful, so joyful, so welcoming in the heart of every Sister that I have met from Appalachia to Moscow, from Atlanta to Nairobi. And that something is actually a Someone...Jesus.

Everyone knows Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She recognized Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor, and it was her desire to give every human being the love and dignity in death that is their God given right as a soul made in His image and likeness. Her Sisters continue to minister to the least in God's kingdom. It takes enormous amounts of Grace to reach out, to touch, to embrace, to love the ones that repulse our human nature. It is only through emptying oneself and becoming filled with the Holy Spirit that we are even capable of such love.

These Sisters have done this.

And these Sisters continue to ask for this Grace daily, lest they fall back on human strength - strength that is feeble, weak, inadequate. Let them look up and see no longer us, but only Jesus, is their daily prayer.

Ania and I were given the opportunity to serve Jesus in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor at bible camp in Atlanta this week. These children may not appear to many to be the poorest of the poor. They have their physical needs met, but not all poverty is physical. In fact, spiritual poverty is more devastating because there are eternal consequences, and the decay of one's soul is not so obvious as a physical wasting away. Our mission is to know, love and serve Jesus who is present in each of these children. We are praying for the Grace. It is only by this same Grace that any of us have become spiritually rich.

Bible camp is long. It is hot. It is loud. The children challenge us to rely on the Grace. The closer we get to the children, however, the better we can see Jesus, and friendships begin to form.

And when we return to the Sisters' home at the end of the day, we come to the chapel to spend time with Jesus in the quieter moments. We cannot serve Jesus from our depletion. We must come and be refilled daily.

Thank you, Jesus, for inviting us to go beyond ourselves, and to learn to recognize you in those around us. Amen

Every Bit a Princess

Today Ania celebrates her fourteenth birthday, and I can't begin to tell you how honored I am to be her mother.

A word of wisdom to parents of young children -- don't blink! They grow up so fast, and you don't want to miss a moment!

A is for ACTIVE, you can't keep her down!

N is for NOBLE, she wears the King's crown!

I is for INFECTIOUS, her exuberance spreads,

A is for ALWAYS, reaching out to new friends.

Ania, you are such a gem! You sparkle and shine wherever you go, and the many friendships that you've made both far and near attest to that. "Let your light shine before all, that they may see the good that you do and give glory to God the Father." (Matt: 5:16) You do this naturally, with such ease. Recognize it as a gift from God, and always use it to build His kingdom.

I am so proud of you, and I love you dearly!

Happy birthday, Ia. (Ee - ya)!

Love,
Mama

Seven Quick Takes (vol. 3)

Pampered For A Day

Last weekend Lucia was a bit disappointed that she could not go on the ski trip with the scouts, so I promised to give her a fun weekend anyway. Since it was just the two of us, we really played it up big. Here is a run down of our time together.

1.  The school bell rang at 3:00 on Friday, and the first thing we did was go to Lucia's basketball game. She played well, but her team could not pull off a win. The pink team lost to the purple team, 14 to 16.

2.  After a quick freshening up, we went to a friend's house to see their newborn baby, and were promptly invited to stay for supper. Lucia and I had plans, but she quickly decided that her preference was to stay, so we did.

3.  After supper we returned home to watch TWO American Girl movies, Felicity and Samantha. I love these movies because the role models for the girls have good, strong values, and they help the girls grow into good, morally strong women. They don't follow the trend of modern day movies that portray the adults as stupid and clueless, and the children as the ones needing to bail out their parents.

4.  When the movies and snacks were finished, after midnight, Lucia and I crawled into bed. I let her pick which side to sleep on, and she chose her daddy's side. There we slept until 9:00. We would have stayed in bed longer, but we had to pick up Grandma to head over to the bridal shop and pick up Lucia's junior bridesmaid dress for Aunt Johanna's wedding. What a beauty! I hope she doesn't surpass the bride:)

5.  Then, off we went to the St. Patrick's Day parade to march and throw candy! On the way home we stopped at Sonic for their happy hour slushes. Lucia got a Route 44 double lemon slush and she drank it all!

6.  We came home and recuperated from the afternoon heat, and then I took Lucia to see The Lorax. Aunt Amy is the general manager at a Regal Cinema, so every once-in-a-while we take the kids to see a movie that is worth watching. Lucia loved it! Since we hadn't had dinner yet, we ran through a McDonald's drive-thru on the way.

7.  As we were leaving the parking lot, I headed in the opposite direction as home. Lucia started questioning me, but I wouldn't answer her. She finally figured it out when we pulled into the Cold Stone Creamery, and she grinned from ear to ear. She loves ice cream!

Lucia enjoyed all the fuss, and had a lot to tell her daddy and siblings when they returned home, but when I pointed out to her that we could afford to do this every weekend if she didn't have two brothers and a sister, she very quickly and vehemently dismissed my proposal. She would never choose fuss and fanfare over her family, and for that I am so very, very grateful
