Getting to Know the Boys

The Kenya Diaries (vol. 7)

June 18, 2006

Today is the feast of Corpus Christi. We got up at 6:30 and went to 7:00 Mass. Afterward there was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament through the school to bless all the rooms and offices. Flower petals were scattered along the way by people in the procession, which Ania and Lucia quickly gathered when it was over. What a blessing - to have the Precious Body of Christ brought to my door step! Jesus, bless all who inhabit this place with good health, physically and spiritually! Amina!

I made banana pancakes for breakfast - without a recipe. Everything I make these days is without a recipe. They actually turned out great and the kids especially loved them. We had enough to share with a few boys who came by. The boys were amazed. They were like banana muffin pancakes.

Then we went for a walk out to the soccer field, but instead of turning the usual left, we took a right and came to a huge thorn tree - one that all the kids could climb at the same time. They laid right down on the branches and pretended to be leopards. One of the boys, Ben, came with us and had a lot of fun. The kids really seem to like him and they get along great.

We are really getting to know these boys, some more than others. There are over one hundred at Sacred Heart Boys Secondary  School. They love to interact with our kids, and discuss the concerns of the world with Andy and me. Some of them stopped by our door today to sit and talk about life in America. Their understanding of things is somewhat tainted by Hollywood, and to be able to speak the truth to them is enlightening to say the least.

Maybe someday we will get a chance to sponsor one of these boys to come to America. I hope so.

Dennis gave Philip a porcupine quill today, that he found out on the soccer field when he first arrived at Sacred Heart. He gave Lucia a little Snoopy statue wearing a winter hat. They loved these little tokens of his affection.

Thank you, Jesus, for a good day and for letting us get to know these boys better. I want to help my children cultivate lasting friendships with them. Help Andy to be not only a good chemistry teacher to them, but a good Christian mentor and role model as well. Some of these boys have no parents and are hungry for strong, manly guidance. Thank you, Jesus, for bringing us here. Amina.
