Simple Pleasures

The Kenya Diaries (vol. 9)

June 20, 2006

This morning on our way back from Rongai, we took a detour and found a playground at the local Anglican Church. This was no run-of-the-mill playground for Kenya. The equipment was painted in bright rainbow colors, and was in very good repair. There was a swing set, merry-go-round, and a see-saw. The kids had a blast, and affectionately coined it "funsville park."

When we returned to the school Kevin and Andy walked to the post office in Rongai. They decided to give the boda-boda's a try on the way home. Kevin said this: On the way back from Rongai, Daddy paid for two boda-boda's to bring us home. I felt like my driver was going to crash into Daddy's driver the whole way. It was easy to stay on because there are handle bars to hold onto, and a big, comfy cushion to sit on. It cost us 10 shillings each.

Kevin also said this about yesterday: After the rain quit, everybody went outside to watch the boys get the courtyard ready for inspection except me. I stayed inside and built a gorilla hide-out and communications base. The gorillas have headsets and are named Agent 1 and Agent 2. They have walkie talkies, books, a microscope, telephone, and a control tower.

It is AWESOME!

I made it out of paper, pens, markers, Duck tape that we put on our suitcases for identification purposes, and on old cookie box. The gorillas are the plastic ones that Grandma sent with us to Africa. It was so awesome...Mama took pictures.

Andy and I looked for the Southern Cross tonight, but couldn't find it. The stars are all so beautiful, but very unfamiliar. Even in Moscow I remember how comforting it was to look up and see the same Big Dipper I have been able to identify since early childhood. Traveling to foreign lands is a funny thing. So much is unfamiliar, but the one thing that all peoples have in common is that God created them, Jesus died for them, and the Holy Spirit empowers them. Thank you, God, for inhabiting the praises of ALL your people. Amina.
